is it okay for my sponge filter2007-11-24 23:37:42

i always reuse the sponge by cleaning it with treated water..will the good bacteria still in there and is it good for the fish?

i've done this for almost a year now and the fish looks fine and always hungry.

Answers:

actully tht is really good so you dont kill the good bactirea.

nothing wrong with that - twelve months means you have probably got the best out of it, I tend to replace about then but always wash and store the old as back-up

(never had to use them) I don't even use treated water!

rinse it in a bucket with some tank water in when you do your water changes.

don't clean it too much.

you sound like you are on the right track :)

That's what I do to all my sponges and cartridges. I don't understand why people throw them out, not only are they wasting money to buy new ones but they are throwing out the bacteria that's keeps their tank healthy.
should be fine I would use the old water from the tank when you do a water change that way you don't lose any bact. from the treatment chemicals, but up to you.
