is it possible to breed feeder fish2007-11-24 23:37:44

i mean yeah their only 10 cents each but i am limited to how often i can go buy them cuz i dont have a vehicle to go to my closest pet store

Answers:

fish are deemed feeder fish because they aren't as nice looking or because there are an excess of that type of fish. they are just as capable of breeding as the regular ones.

if you can't get to the store often though, make sure you have all the stuff you need for breeding and raising before you start then. like fry/baby food, a tank for them to grown out in, and a heater because fry usually need to be at 80F or they'll die.

what kind of fish are you raising on feeders??

breeding feeders will take a little while because your just starting. i would try guppies though because they breed like nuts. start out with 7 or 8 females and 4 males.

if you stick to the 10 cent toughies and comets i don't know if you can breed those yourself?? i have never seen them breed.

If you need small fish go for the guppies, if you need larger try the mollies and sward tails they breed like crazy. But it takes time for them to grow up to feeding size so you'll have lots of fish. It isn't impossible to breed gold fish if you get the right pair but its hard. Since 1987 I haven't gotten a pair of gold fish to breed. If you are feeding store bought feeders make sure they are healthy. They aren't taken care of very well and lots of them are sick. But yes breeding is the way to go if you want live food supplies.

If you've got a pond or big sealed pot outside, you can breed live bearers very quickly. They grow a bit slower in aquariums though.

Other wise, get a bait trap and go down to your local creek.

the creeks around my area a full of introduced fish: swordtails, guppies, platies, gambusia. I used to go down with two bait traps and catch enough to feed my barramundi for a few weeks.
