Depends on what kind of fish you have in the tank. I mean it doesn't hurt and it can be beneficial but its also more work. Most plants need extra special lighting and plant soil or sand. Plus fertilizer to help them grow. If you have fish that eat plants they may just tear them apart and that can be a messy situation when plant matter is scattered all over the tank.
It can look really neat to have live plants though if you have the time, energy and money to make that kind of investment. But it can be a lot of work. Plants provide extra food (for vegetarian fish such as guppies and mollies) and extra oxygen.
