In general if you throw 2 betta into a swimming pool sized tank. They will still fight. In a 55 gallon it's possible one of the males might be more dominant than the other male and the females. After a few brief fights they might work out a pecking order. More likely they'll end up killing each other. It will depend on the temperament of the betta in question. Also realize that once peace breaks out add/removing betta will often result in a new cage match.

Mixing multiple males in with females is generally a very bad idea. My female tank goes into full cage match mode if the girls can merely see a male betta. (Lord knows what carnage my boys fighting over my girls, who are fighting over the boys, would result.) Mating instincts are closely tied to betta aggression.

PS- Pretty much the only way to do this is get a mellow male, and female. Breed 100+ betta. Remove all, but the mellowest of the males, and any aggressive females. You might get 20 females, and 1-3 males in your tank. (Then you hope you don't lose the tank alpha, and have things go to hell in a hand basket.)

IMO even though there's lots of room for them, probably not. Males are known to not get along, and from what a friend told me that used to breed them, they can get pretty nasty with the females also. Check this forum, this guy knows a lot about bettas.
