if the plant dies it will put pollutants into the water which will be bad for the fish..

there was a MYTH that BETTA fish would eat off the roots of plants - but Bettas are CARNIVOURS and would starve in a few months (they can go along time without food)

defintely will make the fish happy. Makes a natural habitat for them. More Oxygen in the water, and a place to play hide-N-Seek. happy fish.

Yep, they have beneficial bacteria living on them, they filter water and add oxygen. Not to mention a "late night snack" when the fishies need one. Fish also lay eggs on them, well some do anyway.

Yes, that is very true. The fish will feed on the plants, not to mention that the plants will help put oxygen back into the water. Plants will help them feel like they are in their normal environment too. Of course not just any plants. It has to be underwater plants, but I'm sure that you already know that.

I agree with shaun that plants will oxygenate the water. they do provide a good place to feel comfortable. as to what plants to get, pet stores have a good variety that are usually kept in the tanks with the fish. be sure to check the fish in the tank with the plants you choose. if there are any signs of stress on the fish, you can suspect the plants to have a problem too, and the last thing you want is a tank full of ick or something worse. keep the plants trimmed for dead spots or any other signs of decay that will contaminate your tank
