The answer is yes it does.

The plant should be a water plant ( any other won't do cause it will die and rot and cause your fish to get sick.)

The plant helps in purifying the water and giving it oxygen which is water dissolved and helps your fish to breathe. It rids the tank of contamination and what your fish throws out after digestion.

The plant even serves as a curiosity for your fish and keeps it more active and it uses it as a shelter when it gets familiar with it also.

Over all it is quite beneficial for your fish.

Plants help out the aquarium ecosystem in 2 ways:

1. They provide O2 to the water which fish need. This can also be accomplished by proper filtration or an airstone, but nothing looks better in your tank that live plants, and.

2. Live plants will feed off of the Nitrates that are in the water. Nitrates are the final parameter in your water once a tank has cycled, and just depending on the amount of Ammonia the tank had in it when you did you cycle will probably dictate just what your Nitrates are currently at.

If you do not have a water testing kit - I would recommend getting one, but you could put together a really nicely planted tank (that would benefit you fish) at the rate of about 1 plant per 5g of water. Keep in mind though that certain plants need certain levels of light (measured usually in what is called WPG or Watts Per Gallon). Also - some plants thrive with CO2 in the water, but that is a whole other story.
