hmm. I had the same problem for my betta last week and got very good answers in this forum and he's doing a lot better now. Try keeping his water clean and warm and add some good Aquarium salt (for tropical fishes). I have the "Jungle" brand and it works very well. Check if there is any fungal growth on his body. Check if he has any white spots too. Check this website which has very good explanation of treatments.

Check out the "Betta health" link. They have all the diseases and symptoms listed out and the steps and hopes for getting each one cured.

On the whole, doing a 30% water change every 3 or 4 days and keeping him warm, adding water conditioner and aquarium salt would be the answer to a lot of betta diseases.
