I would suggest looking for aquarium kits on sale at pet stores and places like Wal Mart. They are worth the cost as when you buy used tanks, buy the time you buy all the bits that go with it, you end up spending more.

Look on your local craigslist site, or join a local freecycle group.
If you get it off of craigslist, you'll either get it for free or very cheap. Freecycle only has free stuff, but it's difficult to find a decent tank.
Go to Walmart.I got my 29 gal, the stand and the other things for $170..a chunk of change but very affordable. And don't get cheap and buy the 10 gallon or you'll regret it and wind up buying the 30 gallon later..
