my male betta fish is strangeee
I have a beautiful deep red crowntail male betta fish, and i've had him for a few months. Few weeks ago I changed his water like i usually do, put in the conditioner and all his needs, but he started acting strange. He sometimes faces directly up, lays on the rocks sidways, changes color fades it then comes back to normal, and other strange positions and actions. I thought he was just shocked so i left him alone, but he's been like that till now, which is a few weeks after. He swims and i haven't seen him eat, but im pretty sure he does because his food is gone few minutes later, and his color is fine, just sometimes it's faded. What's wrong with him?
Answers:Some of this falls under weirds things betta do. Generally a color fade is sign of stress. If it happens after a water change it's one of 3 things you didn't remove the chlorine, you used water from a different source (different water chem), or the temp was off. Also he may fade when frighten or resting. Female tend to be much more prone to this.
I would worry as long as you aren't over feeding, are cleaning his water regularly, and aren't subjecting him to sudden changes in temp or water chemistry.
well, if you got it from a pet store than its probably an old geezer and about to die(to put it bluntly)
if you want healthy fish, mate old fish and get the babies into a new tank upon birth. then just live with it.
He may be getting old. The same thing happened to my mom's male bettas.
I have never used conditioner in a betta tank. i leave water in gallon jugs for a week or so with the lid off & this conditions it by nature. Any chemical can be a shock on a fish.
i would agree that it could be one of those strange things bettas do. the other day my fish was horizantal, but he is fine. the color fade is from stress. the water temp being to color could be that. the normal temp for betta is 75-80. but keep an eye on him. it doesnt sound like he's in any serious danger. just be sure he eats everyday. But do some trial an error. like change his rase or lower the temp or change his diet, try includding some bloodworms or maybe even a pea here and there. good luck!
