my son put a lot of fish food into our goldfish tank and now 1 is at the bottom-ailing what can i do2007-11-24 23:39:29

Other wise I'd get a bucket or something. Put at least 50% of your current water, and 2 handfuls of gravel into the bucket. Put the fish in. Dump the rest of your water, and rinse out your gravel with clean water. Don't clean off the filter media if you have a filter. Then tomorrow replace 30% of your water. Rinsing your gravel will remove excess food, but it will also kill the bacteria that break down ammonia and nitrites into nitrates. The saved gravel will help jump start the bacteria in your gravel. Likewise cleaning the filter media will kill off bacteria.

Don't feed your fish for the next 2 days. On day 2 cook some peas, and remove the peel on the peas. Throw 1-2 peas per fish into the tank. Hopefully the "bottom ailing" fish just has digestive troubles which have compressed his swim bladder.

you need to remove all the excess food that you can and change the water in the tank and hope the little guy makes it. I have that problem once in a while with my 3 year old nephew, he likes to feed the fish, it's usually the beta's that get fed tho, because they are easier to get into. good luck!
