plocostomus with eggs
i have a100 gallon tank with a15 inth plocostomus what happens if a fish lays eggs in my main tank instead of my breeding tank the plocostomus would eat the eggs right? how do i remove the eggs out of my main tank into my breeding tank?
Answers:Common plecostomus have only been bred a few times in captivity. I read a report of a Hypostomus punctatus breeding in a tank where the male guarded and fanned dark brown eggs and later guarded fry in tree roots . Some think that is just a myth. Males take up residence in caves where the female lays her eggs. In the wild, these spawning caves are along river banks near the surface. The male sort of hangs out with the eggs and hatched fry who suck on whatever is around. The keys to their breeding are HUGE tanks (500-2000 gallons), a pair of plecostomus (very hard to tell sex) that get along, lots of surface algae and vegetables, and few distractions. Most plecos are raised in ponds in the far east, Florida, and other places. A few plecostomus, like bristlenose plecostomus, have been bred in aquariums. With this species, it is also possible to tell male from female with certainty (the male has more barbels and adornments).

you might have better luck moving the other fish to the breeding tank until the plocs hatch
Is it the plecostomus that laid the eggs? Not likely unless you have two very large plecos. Plecos will not eat their own eggs, the males guard them. They are cave spawners and the male stays in the cave until the eggs hatch and keeps water moving over the eggs so they don't fungus.
If it is another fish that laid the eggs, the pleco will eat them if given the chance. If the eggs are on a moveable piece of rock or ornament, take it out of the tank and put it in your breeding tank.
What kind of fish laid the eggs? Are the parents taking care of the eggs? If so, move them too.
If the eggs are on the glass, move the pleco.
Feel free to email me with more questions. I have spawned plecos and many kinds of tropicals.
