starting a 50 gallon fish tank2007-11-24 23:40:18

i have i have all the basics and i know that i need to let the water sit for at least 48 hours. but the only other tank i had was a 10 gallon with 2 goldfish and a sucker that i just put all in at once. i know not to do that with this big of a tank.

should i start with some live plants or fake till it is well cycled?

how many of what kind of fish should i start with?

and any other tips

yes you should start out with fake plants until everyhting gets settled and cycled. You want to get fish that mix well with each other. You can either have aggressive fish or non aggressive fish here is an example:

Aggresive fish : Oscars/ jack dimpsey/ pacu/graumies (sp?)

Non Agressive: Mollies/ cory cats/ Guppies/ shrimp

You can not mix the two because the aggresive fish will kill the non aggresive.

start by putting a carbon filter in the corner or a upwelling blower that will get good water circulation, live plants are good for the water system but it depends on what fish you want to put in. a 50 gallon tank is a big system, you will need to check for ammonia and nitrate levels aswell as p.h again, species dependant. and then you have to factor if its warm or cold water. the best all round option is the corner carbon filter and some grasses. fish would help to..

i have a 50 or you may say 55 gal tank. its not really that complicated to set up you're tank , you were ryt you need to at least let the water sit in for 48 hours , but i did mine for like a week. first i put the gravel and filled it up with water, then put the decorations "fake plants" cuz i don't want to be bothered in taking care of a live plant. then i put water conditioners, freshwater salt to improve the gill function of the fish and as i said i waited for like a 4 days to 7 days before i put the fishes.
