what can a mixed platies breed with(besides themselfs)2007-11-24 23:40:36

1 of my platies had one baby and the day after that, the mother died.after that,the baby was gone! is there somthing wrong with the mom or MY TANK?PLEASE LET A FISH BREEDER ANSWER!

I don't think I qualify as a fish breeder although I have had live bearers give birth in my tanks a few times and have raised the fry, hopefully that qualifies me enough for you. As far as your breeding question, platies can sometimes breed with other live bearers such as mollies and guppies. As for your mother platy dying and the baby being missing, its tough to say. The stress of giving birth can sometimes weaken a fish's immune system so that might be the problem there. As for the baby, well, fish do eat fry, so its possible it was eaten, or it also might be hiding, it can be hard to spot fry if you have plants or rocks or crevices for them to hide in. I don't think the mother dying necessarily indicates a problem in your tank, but I would keep an eye out on the rest of the fish for any symptoms that something isn't right (clamped fins for example).

The baby was probably eaten by the mom, or other mollies. A male mollie might have chased the female mollie to death, if you put her back in the tank with them too quickly. Usually the mom should go in a recovery tank. Mabey, having the babie was just too much for her, thats what happened to me before.
