To keep a male with females not in breeding condition, you would need a VERY large tank (like a 55 gallon for maybe 1 male and 2 or 3 females) with more than one female and LOTS of plants and places to hide. They will only mate when they are ready, the male will have bubblenest prepared and the female did show interest in him. Otherwise, there is not point putting them together to see one of them get crush to death and the other had injuries and broken fin all over etc.
