Also do i just put the air stone in the water and let it be? How do they work?
the tank is like 7 inches by 4.5 inches and holds around 1/3 of a gallon.i have one guppy
Answers:I answered your other question but I will tell you on here too.
An air stone doesn't do a thing unless it is attached to an air pump. Get a bigger tank and a filter. Depending on the type of filter you wont even need an air pump. Power filters, those that hang on the backs of tanks are good with adding oxygen. The out flow from the filter causes a little water fall which breaks the surface of the water and allows the oxygen to enter.
all airstones makes no different. Each air stone function exactly the same.
I'd suggest go with Aquaclear "10" they're not very expensive ($15.00) and set it on low. since your tank is only 2.5 gallon you might will go with corner filter box to clean your water.
Hope it helps.
i totally agree with nunya's answer, i have both a pump and stones, and power filter in a 55 gallon with 18 fish.
Yes it goes in the tank and all you do is turn it on. It pushes air into the tank to give the fish more oxygen. But don't get a big one, just a small bubble system that you can put together yourself. You can get them at any Pet Smart and they will help you get the right sizes you need for your tank and explain how to put it together. Good luck
You will need air tubing and an airpump as well. An airstone by itself will do nothing, except maybe grow a little bacteria on it. For that size of fish tank, I say not a very powerful airpump is needed. I recommend you the Tetra Whisper series of airpumps. You can pick probably the lowest one. You might also want to get a gane valve, because the tank is so small. I say maybe a two way gang valve, and do not reduce air flow to reduce air input to the airstone, bleed off air on the second valve. This will help relieve back-pressure on your airpump and let it last longer. Also, I recommend you get a check valve if you don't have a check valve to bleed off air. If your airpump is below the water level, this is recommended to help prevent siphoning of water back into the airpump during power outages.
Some airstones of different materials are for different purposes
Wood airstones make incredibly small bubbles, and is recommended for skimmers.
sand/glass airstones are the most commonly used one. These make small bubbles, but not as small as wood airstones or "micro" bubblers
"micro" bubblers (dunno the real name) make very small bubbles as well, and have a fine surface.
Hope this helps, have fun keeping fish, and God bless.
