i've got this white, stringy, cob-webby stuff in my goldfish tank. any ideas what it is or how to get rid of it? thanks for your help.

The white stuff is not spotty and on your fish's sacles, right? If that's the case, raise your tank's water temp. by about 5 degress, add 1/2 tsp of salt for every ten gallons, and then run to your pet store a.s.a.p. and tell them you've got ich! They'll send you home with some medicine and some directions. Don't waste time -- ich will kill your fish in a hurry.

If it's white and stringy and attached to the fish's body, you've got parasites. Again, head to the pet store and explain. They'll tell you what to do. If you've got parasites, the cause is likely poor water quality. You should do a 20% H20 change every week to avoid this.

If it's just stuff floating around your tank.I have no idea.

We always called that stuff "ick" and the fish usually dies within a few days. Some kind of bacteria, I guess.

it eather is fish sliva or fish barf all you do is take the fish out and clean it out

You should clean it immediatly!

If this doesn't work, buy a new bowl asap. (maybe take a bowl, big enough, to put the fish in for the night or until you can buy a real fishbowl!)

It's a type of chemical that certain fish produce when water is at a certain pH level. Sometimes, this chemical can produce a type of enzyme which the fish will drink, and the enzyme may deteriote the fish's innards. It'd be best to clean out the fish tank, and get some pH testing strips + neutralizers.

To add on to rabidbaby's answer, If the white junk is attached to the glass and floating around, it is usually the bacteria breaking down organics, or bacteria bloom. YI would leave it alone, and let it go away by itself.
