why did my pleco die PLEASE READ Whole Question2007-11-24 23:43:08

i just brought a pleco and before i put him in the tank i cleaned it then put water in then i put a solution that i use called aqua safe that removes all the cholrine and metals in the tap water then i put my four tetras in then floated the bag with the pelco in it in the water for 30 minutes then i put the pleco in and he seemed like he was doing fine but the next morning when i woke up he was dead what am i doing wrong can someone please HELP!

To start with don't clean the tank. Pecos need the bacteria. And before putting any fish into your tank it is best to keep them in the bag and let the bag float on top of the water so that his water temp. gets to your water temp. Then little by little you need to add about 1 cup of your water into the bag about every 10 mins. so that the fish will adapt to your water. Then after the bag is almost full wait 10 more mins. and put stress reliever in the tank then put the fish into your tank and it should do just fine. You have to be very carefull when introducing fish into your tank.

What do you mean by "you cleaned the tank"? Does this mean you took out all the water and cleaned the gravel? If so, this is your problem. The tank needs to cycle before adding fish, this should take up to a month. Fill with water, run the filter, you can sprinkle a small amount of fish flakes or buy a product from your local fish store called "Cycle". Then . before you add fish, TEST YOUR WATER! Again this is something you can do at a fish store.( I would recommend that you do this when you return the fish) OK so after your water is tested and the results are good, add fish. You did that part correct.
