why do my fish eat the other fishes babies2007-11-24 23:43:50

My black mollies had about 15 babies and when I came back from school, they were dead. What can I do to prevent this

When I had sail fin mollies the babies would disappear regularly unless separated but there isn't always enough time in the day to be doing this. Here is the tip for good survival rates in your mollies without spending the time to mess around with separation ( those floating traps can let the small fry though and be eaten anyway) Go to your aquarium shop and ask for 'Floating' weeds. get a good clump of them and keep them in a bunch with some fishing line.

Your baby mollies will hide within this clump in the small sections and the bigger fish can not get to them. Sprinkle small amounts of 'fry' food into the weed and they will not need to venture out with the bigger fish for a feed. When they are big enough to avoid being eaten they will leave the safety of the weeds and come into the community within your tank.

Has worked perfectly for me over many years.

Plus, they don't have the protection instinct.they are naturally used to eating whatever they can..sorry your babies got eaten.

Fish in a tank are still fish, and therefore territorial. That means they see the tank as theirs and the baby fish will be more competition for food. They do not know that you will put in more food. They only know that to survive they have to be sure to get rid of any competition they can.
