they both have red spots on their heads.what does that mean?
Answers:Are the spots only on the head? My first guess is Ammonia burns. Do you change your water often? Is your tank overcrowded? (the rule of thumb for goldfish is 10 gallons per fish because they produce so much waste and grow to be pretty large). It could also be hole in head disease. It's easier if you go to this forum and try to diagnose by the description and photos provided there. It's difficult since I can't ask and you can't answer. :) It's a great forum for goldfish owners.

it's just genetics. it doesn't mean anything. the same thing that determines coat color in dogs and cats is the same thing that determines fish scale coloring.

I am in no way a fish expert. If the spots are new then they could be a few things. Parasites which with some water additives will go away, Or maybe a water problem have you checked you Ph levels. I know with some fish if the nitrates or phosphates or amonia is high they will develop spots like that where they are bleeding out internally. Good luck test the water first. Then treat for parasites.
It's called "Ick", a fungus that your goldfish gets from dirty water. Change your goldfish water often and add a few drops of "Ick-stop" you can find in any pet supply.
They could be getting bit by a very tiny parasite, get a magnifying glass & look carefully in the tank.
it might be bacteria or it's just changing the look

why don't you add some aquarium salt to your tank as
a preventative
Goldfish change colors as they age. But, to be on the safe side, add one tablespoon of salt for freshwater fish for every 5 gallons of tank water. If there is something causing the color change, this will help your fish to overcome it.
