For one thing in my area it is not encouraged. But when my son was young I volunteered at his elementary school and was surprised at the condescending attitude of some of the other parents. They acted like i must not have anything better to do. They seemed to believe that if you weren't getting paid for it , then it was meaningless.

I don't know but that is very sad. I think so many parents are working that it makes it hard. I will do it though, there are actual co-op schools where the parents volunteer to teach a class. I think it is extremly important to be as involved in a childs life as possible.

I would say time is the biggest factor. Most households these days need both parents working to make ends meet and there just aren't enough hours in the day to volunteer at school.

I have to agree. It's the money. Most families need two incomes and I don't know a whole lot of businesses that will let employees take an hour or two off to go volunteer without it creating some sort of an issue within the company.

They figure 'someone else' will do it, or they just don't care about their kids.

I think it depends on the area. I know several parents who volunteer at school as well as several grandparents. My son is only 4 months old but I assist with the reading program at the elementary school on a volunteer basis.
