Did your temperature change? If it doesn't look like fungus, it could just be your tank has gotten colder. Like Koi, goldfish's pigmentation cells expand in the cold, making them look brighter and have more colour to to them. If your fish is fairly young, a year or less, (about one to two inch's) his colour may just be changing and developing as he grows. I have had this happen with many goldfish :) If in doubt as your local fish store, and maybe even take him in for them to have a look at him in person, then if it is a fungus they can sort out which treatment would be best for him :) If he is still eating, doesn't look to have fungus, isn't bloated, top fin is up, eyes are clear, and swims well, I would say he is fine and its a colour change. :) Good luck and enjoy your fish.

Some goldfish darken in color as they get older and in response to light exposure (I read that if you keep a gold fish in a dark room all the time he will turn very pale or white).

So long as he is healthy otherwise, this is normal.

goldfish act like us int the sun--we get a tan and when we stay out of the sun we become pale---your fish probably need more light to regain their color. If that doesnt work then it is genetics as "black" is a dominant gene over gold but usually it is the lighting situation--feed your goldifsh "color" flakes to enhance their coloring.
