You most probably have a tail nipper in the tank, fin rot is normally pretty even in it's destruction and you'll see signs of ick or fuz. If you have a hospital tank set up move him out of the populated tank and watch him. He should heal up fine. if he does get ick or continues loosing his tail treat both tanks for fin rot. I have thirty tanks and in the arena of 900 fish, plants and other aquaria. one of my tanks (100 gallon) is set up as a hospital tank, a 5 gallon tank set up for a hospital tank is a good idea for all fish owners, you can use the tank for healing and for watching new fish you buy from most mega marts before introducing them into your population. I have had a lot less illness by using this practice.

your tank is probally getting a fungus it eats at the fishes scales and tails get some tablets to cure the fungus because the fungus might kill your fish

Generally this is due to fin rot, but it could be the result of fighting, or fin nipers. The most common cause of fin rot is nitrate poisoning, but it can be caused by disease, or other sources of stress. With guppies like all live bearers I'd be sure to check my water hardness. They will do best in medium to hard water. Also male guppy are a favorite of fin nipers like tetras, and barbs.

If you house it with other guppies , the males will shed each other's tails to get rid of competition. Their tails are how they attract mates. If you house it with girl guppies they will do the same, but only because they want to catch the pretty tails. Then again, any other fish might just see a tasty looking piece and decide to have bite. TIger barbs are notorious fin biters!
