will putting sand on the bottom of a tank hurt the fish2007-11-24 23:44:28

our tank has 2 plecostomus, 2 parrot fish, a tiger oscar, and an albino oscar. we wanted to decorate the tank with sand and marbles , but wasn't sure if the sand would do any harm. any info would be helpful.

Sand is fine. most fish live in sandy conditions but in aquariums it's tricky because it doesn't offer the same bio-filtration benefits like gravel since it's much denser and doesn't allow circulation. You just have to clean the detritus/poop waste sitting on top of the sand more often.

Just be careful not to add crushed coral sand, as it will raise your ph levels and keep them raised.

It could. Instead you should just use something that you can buy for your fish at the pet store, like little pebbles, marbles, or something else. It would probably be helpful to ask the person who works at the pet store.

with Oscars you are better off with gravel the y are messy fish and will dig up your sand causing the water to be cloudy all the time but no it will not hurt them!

Nope, you'll be fine with it. Actually some might prefer it, esp. the pleco.

I put blue playsand in my tropical fish tank.

You have to wash it.and wash it.and wash it.at least until the water runs clear. Make sure you don't add the sand while the filter is running or there are fish in it.
