How To Get a Horse To Move2007-11-24 21:16:16

I have a 5 yr Paint Gelding that will not move. He will not trot, it is very hard to get him to walk, last night he was turning in a circle and stopped we had to have 2 people come out into the arena 1w/ a whip and the other came to try to lead him he still would not move. Please help I'll take any ideas !!!!!

maybe he is in pain? if not, try carrying a crop, or lounging him.

How did you get him into the arena to start with? I always find food is a good start - you can always wean them off later. Have you tried join-up? My arab x would only lunge one way when I first got him, but he had next to no training and was unbroken so it was probably just inexperience. I don't think chasing them with a whip really works cos you just end up with a scared animal and not a willing one. If he doesnt want to go forwards try backwards - he'll soon get fed up with that and may decide to cooperate. Good luck. Su

Did this just start? Does she seem to favor a leg or is she just lazy? I had a horse that did the exact same thing. She refused to do more than a walk. A day later I found she had an abcessed foot. A couple days later she was almost back to her old self.

If your leading him then you can knock him off his balance by pulling his head to the side instead of straight ahead. When pulling his head to the side pull at the same time. Hope this helps, it works with my horses.

Try whiping the rope again when I do that it works.

One time at a horse show we were at, the people from our ranch were trying to get this one horse to go into the trailer. But he wouldn't move. So it took a crop and 6 people to get him in.
