How do you calculate to size of an English Cinch2007-11-24 21:15:55

I have been riding Western for years and done a little dabbling in the English world. I recently bought a draft cross that rides both English and Western. I bought a dressage saddle that fits his back, but it didn't come with a cinch. I measured him for a cinch like I always did with my western, and came up with 42". I know thats big, but he is a DC. I don't have a cinch to measure from and I just want to make sure I am getting a good size estimation before I shell out the cash for a new cinch. He doesn't have to have a dressage girth (I know they tend to run smaller) as I plan to use him for my lessons and some trails. I just like the seat in the dressage saddle and thats why I bought one. My saddle is the two buckle style. Thanks for your help!! :0)

Answers:

Set your saddle on your horse - including the saddle pad, and with a helper, run a measuring tape from the center hole of the billet strap on one side, to the center billet hole on the other side. Make sure you keep the measuring tape laid snug (not tight!) against the horse just as the girth would be. That's the length you need.

Hope this helps!

1. Lead your horse to a level surface and have a helper hold him while you work. Standing on your horse's left side, hold one end of a lead rope just behind his withers. Run the length of the rope down his right side, around his barrel, and up his left side just behind his elbow-where your front cinch would normally lie. Pull the rope snug, but not so taut that it presses into his skin. Then grasp the rope at the point where it meets the end. You'll use this meeting point to take your initial measurement.
