How do you get a mule to trust you
i just got a mule monday and he is kind of skiddish and he won't even let you come aroud him or touch him if you have a haulter with you how do i gain his trust?
Answers::) Theres so much info I would love to give you right now. But I have questions for you also before I can give you more.
I would seperate him from any other animals. It will take mules a while to come up to you. I give my new mules around 2 wks of 'adjusting' time before I even start to ride them or work them.
You don't say how old this mule is or what his prior training is etc. Is he halter broke to begine with? That will change what ever my next advice will be.
It can take up to a year for a mule to bond with you and accept you. For right now, until I get more info from you, just go out, take a bucket of treats with you and a brush and just see where that gets you for now.
Give him carrots and a snuggle. Then slip the halter on.
only hand feed him , dont walk toward him ,let him coem to you , give him a treat ,only touch him ,when he stand beside you , this could take a while, talk to him ,in a low tone
get food and call him when he comes halter him and ride try to post with him (where when he goes up you sit up and when he goes down you sit down) it will make you come close to him
Try join up.What you do is you get in the middle of a round pen or whatever is available as long as its big enough to run or trot around in and you drive him/her away from you then if he puts his/her head down and starts making motions with his/her mouth then square up your shoulder to his/hers.
Slow and steady wins the race. I have worked with mules in the past and all I have to say is slow and steady.
Spend time with him, the more time you spend together the more accustomed he will be with you. Keep doing this until you are positive he trust you.
This is a great site, you can write to her and she'll answer you quickly. Sylvia Scott Natural Horsemanship. Just look up these words and her site will come up, she's terrific, she is a horse trainer. I'm sure one of the things she'll tell you is to give mule some time to adjust, we always wait a week before trying to approach, he doesn't know you and you don't know him. He has to look you over and you don't know what kind of a background that he has really. I'm sure she'll advise you to take "baby steps" and then give you some ideas.
You could find some "mule trainers" sites too, I'm sure, but try Sylvia, I ask her everything. Ask her about a mule site for questions and she'll know that too..
