How do you get your horse to do a lead change
Getting your horse to the level where they are able to do a good flying change, & by good I mean that they are correct in their movement & changing both front & hind at the same time, takes alot of specialized training, patience & time. In order to achieve a flying change your horse must first understand lateral movement. In retrospect a flying change is the same body movement as a sidepass..you are moving off one lateral line to another. You need to have control over the shoulders, rib cage, & hips of your horse to be able to get them into the correct position to be able to "get out of the way of themselves". What I mean by getting out of the way of themselves is that they need to be able to pick up one side of their body as they are releasing the other to be able to change leading legs. A horse that is heavy throughout the shoulders, ribs, & hips will not be able "lift" to be able to switch leading legs. It takes a while to be able to successfully teach your horse to carry themself in the correct position to be able to do a lead change which is why when you see a good dressage or western riding horse doing lead changes it looks so flawless, light, & effortless. It is not an easy task to accomplish but when done right theres nothing more beautiful then a good lead change.
its called a flying change. normally when you do this you will be making a figure eight type of form. Then in the middle of your figure, you are going to kick the inside (going to be inside) of your horse and he should do a flying change. GOOD LUCK!
It depends on if your jsut starting out or if your horse already knows how to do them. If your horse knows how to do them then pick up a nice canter go across the diagonal and just before you get the fence on the opposite side lightly squeeze on your inside rein and slide your outside leg back and give a steady squeeze. If your horse doesnt know how to do automatic changes than start out easy. First set up a pole on a diagonal then ask your horse for his canter, go across the diagonal, and ask for a trot right before the pole, as you go over the pole use your inside rein and outside leg so the horse gets use to the aids. Then ask for your new lead after the pole. Eventually you will be able to do this with less and less trot work before and after the pole.
There are two kinds of lead changes, simple and flying. To complete a simple lead change you simply lope and when you want to change you ask your horse to trot for only 2 or 3 strides then ask them to pick up the other lead. To complete a flying lead change you sit on your outside hip and squeeze with your outside leg and when you want to change leads you shift your weight to your inside hip and stop squeezing with your outisde leg and squeeze with your inside leg. Hope this helped.
