How do you know when a horse has become pregnant besides the obvious veterinary check ;)
Our stallion mated with two mares 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was told that when the mare is in heat, they will breed until the mare 'takes' gets pregnant. Is this true?
Answers:It depends on the mare, you can vet check them "in foal" and some will still show signs of heat. The best answer to actually vet them, otherwise, if you are waiting for the end result, wait for the mare. Typically a mare cycles every 23 or so days, just short of us humans.. they have tell tale signs but, 4 months could go by and alll of a sudden she could act in "heat" again(General talk, time frames not factual) Sorry, I've been attacked once or twice in here!!) Anyhew, if you want the mare bred and paid a breeding... definately play your part and talk to your vet. Its not the stallion owners responsibilty and if you wait too long, they will not alway "guarantee live foal". In your case, wait and see or vet check, its all in your importance of th matter.
Hope she took, ultrasounds, after a couple months of exposure are not all that expensive. Like I said, just depends on you and what you are trying to do.
Take care.
Well - mares generally don't show many signs that they are pregnant until after 9-10 months, when they start getting large and their teats begin to "bag up". So a veterinary check this early in her possible pregnancy would be the recommended way to find out. Good luck and congrats if she's conceived!
When my mare was bred she changed moods almost instantly, turned into a doll. At 2 months the vet checked her and she was pregnant, at 6 months I noticed she was not acting like a sweet heart anymore had her rechecked and she had absorbed the baby and was no longer pregnant.
well, if they are pregnant, they won't go into heat! ;) And they'll get fat! They'll probably start eating more too, and be a little more lazy. I love colts - they're so darn cute!
The only way to be certain the mares are pregnant is with an ultrasound. The other advantage of an ultrasound is that if there are twin embryos, one can be pinched off which will give the remaining embryo a better chance of surviving and producing a healthy foal.
Have your mare ultrasounded by the vet- this will tell you if she is pregnant or not. Mares normally don't ovulate until right before they go out of heat, so it may not appear as though she is in foal at first. Personality changes sometimes happen with a mare. Good luck, and congrats if your mare is in foal !
not in all cases, we normally cover our mares in the school and bring the stallion 2 her so we know that she has definitely been covered and then get a vet 2 check before trying again if she hasn't taken as some mares will abort even if they have taken when a stallion gets near so don't rely on her not being in heat anymore, get a vet check.
An ultrasound is great however, if you do not want to pay for that there are some pregnancy test kits from Valley Vet. Also, at any time check your mares teats. If they are pointed towards her legs (out) and not straight or in, that is also a great sign. Good Luck!
