How do you know which bit to use on your horse
I have had the same horse all my life and still do have him and now i have a new horse and never had to worry about what kind of bit to use before and now there are so many kinds out there what bit do you use? is there any website that give examples or pictures?
Answers:The best way is start out with a simple snaffle most horses respond well to these. If your new horse is young a very mild curb is good too. Don't be rough on his mouth and just be gentle and find out what works best. A lot of tack shops that specialize in these will sometimes be very helpful. Borrow a friends bridle to try different bits and make it less exspensive.
Its kind of a guess and check. Start him in a large, thick snaffle, either Eggbutt or D-Ring. If he doesn't respond well, move him up to a thin snaffle. If he doesn't respond, try a mild Kimberwicke, and then a pelham or elevator bit.
the best thing to to is to keep is simple. start with just a plane loose ring(or some type of) snaffle, then as you start to figure him/her out you will know weather you need a more effective bit. try not to use more of a bit than you really need.

You go by the horses training level and the discipline you are using him for.
I always start out in a snaffle, get the bugs out that way and then move up to a shanked snaffle and then onto a leverage bit.
