How long before you start riding
My horse just had her baby this morning. I was just wondering how long I have to wait till you can start riding her.
Answers:Having been around foals all of my life (at my grandparent's stud ranch) I have had lots of experience riding broodmares after they foal. Theoretically, wait a month or two until your mare is back to stable condition and the foal can walk steadily and has the energy for activity. However, mares can change drastically when they foal (it happens all too often). I have seen a mare go from being incredibly protective one year to having no care where the colt went the next. I would first handle the mare and foal together, grooming and such, to see how your mare is if the foal walks off. If she is frantic, chances are, you may want to avoid riding her until the foal has been weaned. I have gotten into some wrecks riding my mare when she was over protective of her foal. However, if your mare is alright with the foal wandering (as they will do when you're riding) then I would simply say wait until they're both strong and ready. We always go on trail rides with our foals and its perfectly fine. Good luck! Hope that was of some help.
I think at least a month. You should only do flat riding and nothing hard for your mare. She has to have the energy to produce milk for her baby. If you see that she's not producing enough milk, give her more feed and don't work her as hard. If it's the first time she's had a baby wait until she's stable. My mare had her first baby last year and she would have a lot of milk a couple days and little the next. Don't work her to the extent that she's lathered. And make sure that if you go on trails, that the baby is always in view. If the mare begins to fret when she doesn't see the baby, let her know that her baby is safe. Try walking the mama and her baby around before you actually ride her. Walk the mama to the places your going to ride. Have fun with your new bundle of joy.
the baby? you have to wait like 3 years. the mom you should wait a few months at least just to make sure she gets to spends time with the baby once you can seperate them for longer periods start working on ground things like lunging to get her used to it a bit she should be fine in a month or two
Well congrats on the new born baby! I think the mare will want time with her baby and may be skittish with humans for a few months but other than that she may be ridable when her baby is like 6 months old, maybe. Check out more at:
