How long does it take a horse to become sounds after getting shoes2007-11-24 21:15:41

I have a horse that has been lame for 5 days. She's getting shes tomorrow and I was wondering how long it might take her to become sound again. Thanks for your input.

Shoeing a horse wont fix any problems OR make them sound. Sure it will decrease the likelyness that they will become lame but definately isn't a quick fix to anything. The old owner probably meant that the horse has sensitive feet and needs to be shod, if thats the case your horse probably only has a bruised frog or is just a bit sore. If it doesn't clear up soon i'd really really suggest taking her to a vet.

shoes are not going to make a lame horse sound, you have to find what caused the lameness and either let the horse wait it out or do some type of therapy to correct it.

Depending on the lamenss of your horse .Shoeing is just a bandade you need to get to the root of the lameness .If it's just a bruise due to a stone or something like that the shoes will help but if it's a deeper problem you need to address that as well.

If you horse just had sensitive feet like my thoroughbred she was sound in 24 hours after shoeing, she had those "eggshell" hooves that are characteristic of the breed and needed shoes on anything but grass. If your vet or farrier says the horse just needs shoes, it shouldn't take more than a day but if your horse has a stone bruise or any other underlying problems (i.e. laminitis) shoes may not be the answer.

the shoes will not cure lameness. if as you believe she is just foot sore from going without shoes - if she were mine i would allow this to correct itself through rest before she is shod.
