The first stages of labor are contractions, those can last anywhere from an hour to 4 hours. That stage ends when the water breaks. If the water has already broken you have entered the 2nd stage. This should last a maximum of 30 minutes. If your mare does not deliver 30 minutes after the water has broken, call the vet, it is an emergency. The last stage begins after the foal has been born. The last stage can last up to 3 hours, but is very important that the placenta be delivered. If it is hanging, DO NOT pull on it, it will come out on its own. After the placenta has been delivered, check it to make sure it is whole and no peices are missing. If you find that a peice of it is missing, call the vet, it needs to be found and removed.

Make sure you have iodine ready for a naval dip for the foal after the cord has been broken, you do not want in infection of the umbilical cord, it can be deadly.
