How long should I expect the wait to be
I am probably starting at a new barn within 3 or so weeks. I am comfortable with walking and trotting and I usually don't canter in my lessons now. I have only taken about 4 English lessons. I've only ridden (Western, if it matters) since around October. have never jumped before but that will probably be what I will be doing at this barn. How long should I expect it to be before the trainer has me jumping a little bit? I'm just talking like a teeny tiny jump, nothing at all major maybe a foot (I have no idea what you start at) or the smallest jump. I am just wondering so I can tell if she's rushing me or procrastinating with me. How long was if before you were popping over the jumps?
Answers:In my experience, you should not be jumping until you have completley mastered the canter. If you're not cantering in your lessons now, don't expect to be jumping for a while.
I started English when I was 11, and didn't jump for a year. It's a dangerous part of the sport and if your trainer is pushing you to jump and you're not ready - get out of there!
It's much better for her to procrastinate than rush you, what I would recommend is keep working on ground walk - that's the fundamentals for any jumping. You need to be completley comfortable in all areas of the trot - sitting, posting, two-point, half halts, extended.you might feel like it's taking forever, but it's worth it.
When your trainer feels you've mastered these things, it's ok to start ground poles and small cavalettis.
