How long should my horses mane be for hunter braids2007-11-24 21:15:42

i want to make a good impression in the show ring with my QH-cross mare(we show hunters and eq), so i want to start braiding her mane. how long should her mane be to achieve an average-sized hunter braid? and what products do you suggest to help keep it from sticking into the air? i'm planning on using rubber bands to braid her with, if that helps at all. PLEASE ONLY PEOPLE WITH REAL BRAIDING EXPERIENCE! i do NOT want a disaster!

i was always taught to pull my horses mane to about a hands length (that'd be about 4 inches. anything more would be way to long and i would NOT go any shorter then 3 inches)... check with your local tack store there's some good braiding videos out there that you should be able to rent out or have and experienced person show you how it's not the easiest thing in the world to do and sometimes paying the 25 bucks is easier on you and the horse...

First of all, do not use rubber bands. Go all-out and use yarn- it looks the best. Just make sure the yarn matches her mane almost perfectly..

As for the length, it doesn't need to be very long at all. I'd say about four inches at the longest, maybe closer to 3 or 3.5.

ADD- Put a sleazy on her neck just in case. Picking shaving out is a pain, and it will help the braids stay nicer, longer. If she has a problem with rubbing, tie lead ropes over the part of the stall where she can stick her head out so she doesn't rub as much.

Usualy five inches is a good length, just keeping the main damp works fairly well, but I usually use yarn instead of rubber braids.
