How long should the rail (pole) on a horse jump be2007-11-24 21:15:43Answers:

the ones used in HJA approved shows are 10 or 12 feet long.

not too small like about 10-12 feet or if u have a big horse maybe 15
they can be different lengths but i think the average for a standard jump is somewhere between 5 and 7 feet long there are also jumps called skinnies where they are shorter so you have to steer more precicely
Are you looking to set up jumps to practice with at home? We liked to use these 8 footers you can buy at the local farm supply. About 4 dollars each. Also, 8-10 foot long pvc piping is great. Anything wider can be hard to handle on your own. For trot poles, I like a 5-6 foot wide pole as it is easy to work with on the longe line.
I think the standard size is 12 feet. You can go a bit shorter than that for home use or practice, but if you go too skinny with an inexperienced horse or rider, you are asking for run-outs.
The size of the pole doesn't matter as longas it is wide enough for the horse to get through with a foot either size. Sometimes people purposefully use a narrow pole as horses do not like to jump them as much.

Hope this helps
