How many people on here have heard of or seen Akhal-Tekes2007-11-24 21:15:46

I had one on loan and my mother in law had a couple. I live in England and there aren't very many here so i wondered how many people had heard of them or seen them in the flesh and what do you think of them?

I have seen them on my travels overseas, but not in the UK. They are a very beautiful breed of horse, with a lovely golden dun colour although some other colours maybe seen. From what I have been told they have a remarkable endurance, and can travel great distances on very little maintenance, probably due to originating from areas of very arid environments in the Middle East. They are versatile horses and are capable jumpers as well as being loyal servants to their owners. As far as I know, they are known as the equine greyhound. They are also very intelligent animals. I think they would be a joy to own - I would love to get to know the breed better.

I've never met one in the flesh but I think they are one of the most beautiful breeds if their pictures are anything to go by. The pictures I have seen in books show them as fine coated, elegant, athletic types and the coat colour seems to be specific to the breed being a rich glossy golden dun type colour.I don't know about their temperament or abilities, but in an equine beauty contest, they would be right up there in my opinion.

I have only ever seen one Akhal-Teke in the UK, at an endurance ride a few years ago. What a beautiful horse indeed! The metalic sheen on it's coat was so unusual, it seemed 'other worldly'. It's a shame that these gorgeous, spirited, horses are not seen much on these shores, though I think they will gain popularity as the years progress.
