about 8-10 flakes per day (about a square bale a day), but it depends on the horse...
Have fun with him/her!!
I would do half a leaf (that is one section of the bail) twice a day. You might consider supplementing with alfalfa pellets as it gets older, and small portions of sweetmeal/oats in the colder months.
Monitor the animal and ask your vet. I'm guessing a little hear, I've only owned fully grown horses.
The general rule with all horses is 10% of their body weight in hay each day. Guess at your foals weight and go from there. Make sure that it is getting more than hay though. You should probably also give it a small ration of grain each day as well. But not oats - they're not very good for young horses. Talk to your vet. They are the best source of information on feeding your horse. You need to make sure that the little guy is getting everything he needs. Balanced nutrients, ect.
I feed my colts approx 10 lbs a feeding. A couple slivers of grass and one good sliver of alfalfa, twice a day. They are also supplemented with ADM's Patriot Feed Easy junior feed and their Minerals along with 24 hour turnout.
I give my horses 6lbs. there at there perfect weight so I would do half of that.
Free choice grass hay. He can nibble all day and not have to worry about too much protein or calcium problems with his growing bones and joints. Also if he just wants to play with it grass hay is usually cheaper so you won't have such a money loss from a playful youngster! :) If you want to give him a little alfalfa I suggest testing it as it ranges widley in it's nutrient content, but a little as in a flake a day will suffice. Good luck with your little one, babies are so much fun!
you shood ask your vet and if you dont hav a vet get one soon how many pounds of hay maters on allot of things the breed, wate, and hight GOOD LUCK
you should only give them i & a1/2 fakes .
Weanlings expected to mature at 1100 pounds should gain between 1.25 to 2.0 pounds a day. Most weanlings will consume 1.5 pounds of grain per 100 pounds of body weight per day; and 0.5 to 1.0 pound of forage per 100 pounds of body weight per day to meet their needs for growth in moderate condition.
