How much Medicine to Give my Horse2007-11-24 21:15:54

I live in Costa Rica and have a 1200lb Quarter Horse w/Asthma. Everyone here in the countryside gives their horses a natural cough medicine we get at the local Health store. But this is really for humans, but they swear it's great for horses. The amount for an adult just says 3 spoonfuls per day.

I was giving him Clenbuterol (6ml) 2 times per day, but it didn't work very well. So I'm trying what the locals swear by, but I' not sure how much to give him.

Any idea what is a safe amount to give twice per day of a natural cough and bronchial relief syrup? Is a tablespoon per dose (15 ml) too much? That would be 30ml per day.

Any help would be appreciated.

Talk with your vet. Meds are given by weight. And it is not the same calculation for every medication.

Talk it over with your vet. They may also have something better to perscribe your horse.
Firstly, before you try any new medicine, you much check with you vet. This way he's able to tell you if it's even ok for a horse to recive human medicine. and if he says there's nothing wrong with it, he'll be able to tell you how much to give. If not, ask the locals how much they give their horses.
well, if you consider an average human adult may be about 150 pounds, and they get 3 spoonfuls (what size spoon?), I would go by weight==1200/150x3spoons, but asthma is not the same as a cough--asthma causes coughing, but it is a breathing problem...if your horse has a cough, you want something to sooth the throat, if your horse has a breathing problem, you want something that treats that. I suggest you contact a vet.
Well, if your not sure on how much to give your horse. Don't do it if your not sure. Call a equine vet. Or rather have them come out to check on your horse.
