How much does a checkup from an equine vet cost and how often should the horse get them
Also, how much does it cost to get their teeth floated>
Answers:Teeth should be floated once a year and that generally costs between $100 and $200. It depends on your vet and how well behaved your horse is. Laser teeth floating costs closer to $250 or $300 but lasts for much longer.
Horses should have check ups once a year when they get their vaccinations. The thoroughness of your check up will denote the cost of it. Most horses just need their eyes, temperature, weight, respiratory rate, heart rate, and hooves checked. Unless you are worried about lameness or soundness issue you shouldn't need a soundness exam or x-rays. I'm not a vet but I do check my horses' stats once a month and if anything changes drastically I contact my vet or farrier. I try and keep it so I know what is normal for my horse so if the vet ever asks I will know for sure. Breeding stock should be checked for reproductive soundness on a yearly basis at least.
I keep my costs down by cleaning the sheath on my stallions and geldings myself and I also do ultrasounds on my mares. I was trained on how to do these things myself while in college and while doing an internship with a vet. Sheaths should be cleaned on a regular basis as should udders.
vet does floating and sheath cleaning, also shots, for roughly 200 dollars, but depends on vet, this should happen 2 times a year
It would depend on the vet on how much the check up would cost, but the lady who answered before me was WAY off when she said to get a check up 2 times a year! You should have a check up atleast once a month. That will keep your horse in top condition and he/she will be very healthy!
Prices will vary widely, so check around. Twice a year is a really good maintenance period. My vet has a horse wellness package and for about $150 per horse he will come out twice a year, give shots, leave wormer and do a complete physical and correct any problems he finds (like floating teeth, etc.). For me, it's a great deal.
Typically, they should get spring, summer, fall and winter shots. At least where I live in VA they do. Every month, by a vet, is a bit much in my opinion. Unless they were ill or something. ALso, you need to keep up a good deworming program. I pay about 250.00 per horse when they get their shots, which also includes a fecal, sheath cleaning, and more for floating. They check their teeth every time, but only do them about once/twice a year. Again, that depends on the age of the animal.
Once a year is enough, and it will usually cost around 200.00. Keep good worming programs going 2 to 3 mos. Do that yourself..And of course, having their hoofs done every six weeks..Floatation here in Texas is about 40.00.
That depends on where you live on how much it would be. It also depends on what you are going to be using the horse for. I live in Oklahoma and for spring vacc. it is around $100. I show also so a couple of vacc have to be done every three months. Teeth floating is usually around $30. For a regular riding horse that isn't exposed to alot of other horses like at shows usually just once a year. I would talk to a vet in your area to see what they recommend.
