Need to know so I can get a horse.
Answers:This going to depend on where you live & the weather. Also the type of hay. Hay prices skyrocket during droughts & dry summers. I live in the midwest and pay about $130 a ton for orchard grass mix. Your best bet would be call local farms in your area that sell hay you'll find out quick! Good luck !
Depends on the part of the country you live in, the type of hay you buy and whether it is certified weed free. For example, in the county next to where I live a ton of hay, alfalfa/grass, certified is $325 a ton. That is only the start of costs with a horse. Vet care, farrier, pasture rent/care, tack, lessons, etc. are all expensive. Horses are a VERY expensive hobby. A good, started horse for pleasure will run $2500-$5000 dollars depending on breed and age. The sky is the limit on a trained horse, jumper, racer, barrels, dressage.
In Wy, last year, I paid $240 at the highest. Right now, its about 150 for quality alfalfa.
I just paid 185$ in NV
Depends where you get it from.
I have a T-shirt that says."Will work for hay" So that is what I do, sort of...I rake hay for a custom hay company.
I also raise my own hay on 30 acres. It is mostly alfalfa hay although I do have quite a bit of grass in the field these days. I do let the hay have about 70% bloom on the field before I cut the hay which gives me about 14% protein for my hay.
