I don't know exact figures, but most equine vets do not make as much as their small animal counterparts, at least not when they're first starting out. I can tell you, most of my small animal medical bills are much more than comparable equine bills. You also have to think about the expense of being an equine vet...vehicle (a large SUV or van to hold all their supplies for doing farm calls) & gas to make farm calls, supplies and equipment you need to purchase to be an effective vet such as x-ray equipment, ultrasound, etc. None of that stuff comes cheap, and most equine vets do not join a practice like small animal vets do...they must buy their own equipment, rent/buy a building for their office (and having a barn is almost a must for ICU patients) and go out on their own which is a huge financial undertaking. Also, time is a big factor...most equine vets are on call 24/7, especially during foaling season.

It is quite an undertaking, physically and financially, to become and equine vet and be successful at it. Most of them already come out of school in major debt from paying (lots of loans to repay) tuition and fees, then spend many, many thousands more starting a clinic and buying all the supplies and equipment needed to make it operate smoothly. I have the utmost respect for what my equine vets do, and have no problem paying for their services!
