How much grain do you recommened

Well im trying to convince my mom that my horse doesnt need a ton of grain. Even the vet has said it, but I know she always gives my horse more than she is supposed to, and she is wicked overweight. She gets safechoice grain. She is kept in a paddock, and is fed plenty of hay. She has pretty low exersize. I lunge her usually every day, but only like walk trot for 10 minutes, and I sometimes just ride at the walk. We are hiring a trainer, who will probably come twice a week, so she will be getting a bit more exersize then. So, how much grain do you think she should be getting?

All feeds have recommended feeding instructions on the bag, if not on the bag at the manufactures website (for these larger brand names anyway).

I would recommend following the feeding instruction for "maintanence" until she get into shape, they provide instruction based on the weight of the horse. If she starts getting more excersize and "gets into shape", then maybe consider moving her up to the next category (if she needs it).

If your mom does not know this, maybe you could research the adverse effects of overweight horses and provide written information to your mom. (coming from someone else other than yourself) She may think she's being nice to your horse, alot of people want to feed to "buy" the horses affection or think that if they ask for it they are hungry.
