How much hay to feed a 1200+ lb Haflinger2007-11-24 21:15:53

I have a 4 year old 1200+ lb Haflinger that is not being worked much right now. He is getting 3 flakes a day. He is also been hot and jumping over fences so I wonder if this is too much. He gets green pasture turnout 3-4 times a week but there is little grass. Mostly just the hay. How much should he be getting? I cant give him any grain. Makes him too hot. Should I cut down on his hay?

I am no expert here but I do have a haflinger. I would agree that he may be over weight depending on his height. I usually feed two flakes in the morning and two at night. I also feed her a very small amount of grain for the sole purpose of being able to give her some nutrients. As for being hot I am assuming you mean hyper.Which in this case I believe he needs more work. this breed is bred to work therefore he is wanting to work. I would say go buy some driving reins a harness and a sled and go at it,as this is what he is striving for. If you decide to start working him I wouldn't cut down on his hay intake but would increase it to one more flake sometime during the day. I hope this helps.Good Luck and Godbless haflingers.

Taking a wild guess here, but i had a horse about 1000 lbs.. she recieved two flakes in the morning, and two flakes in the evening, Maybe 2 and 1/2 flakes would be good for a 1200 lb horse!! If grain gets him hot, try different kinds of horse food, oat etc., they might not be as bad, and since there is little grass, but still is some, I think this would be perfect. If you dont think he is getting fed enough, try taking him out on a lead line, and take him to long grass and sit there and relax :)!! Hope this helps a little!

I don't think you should cut down his hay. 3 flakes isn't a whole lot. But you could try a different type of hay. Alpha hay has a lot of protein, which can make your horse hot, where as timothy, fescue and orchard grass doesn't. Switching him to a more stemmy hay may help. What kind of hay depends alot on where you live so talk with your hay supplier and feed store.
