Flake size depends on the weight of the bale and the type of hay you are feeding. Generally once the bale is opened up you will see or feel where one flake ends and another starts.

This was already mentioned - do not always feed your horse the same amount from one squeeze of hay to another. Bale size, weight, and quality changes so you need to make the necessary adjustments in your horse's feeding routine.

a flake of hay is easy to get off of the bale. just grab the end and find where there is a noticeable gap and then you have found a slab or a flake of hay. it is called both.

It means what flakes off the bale. Don't rely on that to feed your horse. Instead, feed by weight. Get yourself a good scale and weight your flakes until you are good enough to estimate it by feel. Call your vet and get his/her advice on how much your particular horse needs. Then, feed by weight.

If you are opening a bale, you can just tell what is a flake. If it separtes really easily and it is in one piece, it is considered a flake.

It can really be any size depending on the type of baler used and the type of the hay. I've found that alfalfa flakes (which you probably shouldn't be feeding a horse) are heavier then grass hay flakes. Clover hay is probably somewhere in the middle. I would definately weigh it to determine for sure. My grass hay bales weigh about 50 pounds and there are about 12 flakes/bale. I would say probably 1.5-3 inches/flake. FYI--- we call them flakes, sections, slices, squares, and leafs around here!

A flake of hay is about 4 or 5 inches wide and they break from the bale in these sections. I would like to suggest feeding cubes though. There is no waste and they actually get more out of the feeding, from the fact that they have to chew there food more, { being it's in cubes. } It's easier to store also. Good way to put wieght on your horse !
