How much is too much for a lease2007-11-24 21:15:54

I want to lease a horse that is worth $5000.

I don't want to get ripped off.

How much should I expect to pay for lease per month?

Consider the middleman, my trainer.

Boarding at the barn where I ride is $500 a month.

Answers:

Woah! $500 dollars?!? When i leased it was $175, but that was the half lease and full lease is $350. I would say from $200 to $500 for a full lease. $500 being the max. I wouldn't go more than that. The horse i leased was worth 6,500 and I payed waaayy less then what you'd be paying. But if leasing that horse means a lot to you then i say go ahead and lease him/her! Good luck!

I would not pay much more than $100/month.
$500 a month for boarding!?!?!? What kind of facilities is this!

I use to lease a horse for $125.00 a month, but that was about ummm gosh a LONG time ago!

I know that was not much help, the $500 a month in boarding threw me off hehe

A family run farm.. hmmm.. maybe I should setup some stalls and a pen in the back acerage and open a boarding facility :)

In regards to the lease of the horse, it all depends on how much you really want to spend monthly to lease this horse and never become the owner legally. Leases are nice for people that are not sure if they will keep the animal for that long. However, if you plan on keeping the horse for a long time, why not consider purchasing a horse?

I have leased two horses in the past few years. I usually pay all the expenses for the animal and some sort of insurance, like major medical, but not loss of use. I have never paid for the horse, as both were for sale at the time and could have been sold. Both were valued at about 10K and were training level plus event horses.
Lease prices are usually 1/3 of their purchase price. So around $1650 for the year or $137.50 a month. Sometimes owners want you to insure the horse for loss of use or major medical. $500 isn't that insane for board, my barn is $650 a month and though the facility is nice, its not a "big name" trainers barn
board, plus basic care (farrier, shots, worming, etc) would be a fair price for a full lease. But make sure you dont say you will pay for all the care, you dont want to get stuck with a huge vet bill for colic or something for a horse that isn't yours (unless you cause a problem in the horse, then you are responsible for related vet bills). 500 a month really isn't that outragous for board, if it is a nice faclity then there is nothing wrong with that price. The owner most likely will want at least board for a full lease, it doesn't make sense for someone to full lease out their horse for less then it costs to keep it, they might as well sell it...
a 5,000 dollar horse is average. depends how long you want her/him. If you're paying for food and water, then I'd say 100 - 200 dollars a month is fair. If not it will be more because they'll need more money to pay for that and i'm sure they'd rather you buy it. Depending on the people thou, it varies.
Woah $500 is a lot. The barn I ride at has boarding for $400 and I thought that was insane. I lease a horse and they call it a " half lease" so I have to pay $200 a month, sort of like being a half owner I guess. I wouldn't expect you to pay any more than $250 to lease per month. Crazy money, I hope the horse is worth it ! Good luck !
woah thats a lot for board... i wouldnt be able to say how much i think u should lease the horse for but i live in tasmania the little island off australia and i leased my horse for 10 dollars a month and most people lease the horses here from anywhere between 400 to 800 for a whole year.. but a horse being worth as much as yours in a place like where u live just seems like u could get a fair bit for him:)
Five thousand is not alot to buy a horse. Its simply paying the money to get a well trained horse. He may be a good deal. I leased a horse that was worth 3 times more than that and for 55 dollars a month. Though we were family friends.
