How much pasture space is sufficient for one miniature horse

Most miniatures struggle with being overweight their entire lives. So a large pasture is going to be a problem more than an asset with a mini!

A pony/horse needs between 1-2% of its weight in forage daily. Therefore if you have a 300 pound mini he will need to eat anywhere between 3-6 pounds of hay/grass a day. That isn't very much. And of course you have to use common sense, if your pony is becoming over or underweight on that amount you must adjust accordingly as not every pony has read the rules on how much they need!

The amount of pasture space your mini will need will depend greatly on the type and quality of forage growing. A 1/2 acre of pasture can be thick, lush and healthy and therefore be MUCH too much for one pony. On the other hand, 1/2 acre can be chewed down to the nib and contain only weeds and sparse grass, in which case the pony would require hay to maintain proper body weight.

Minis do require excercise and a chance to move about just as all horses do. Therefore I would recommend you have a space at least 1/2 acre in size. Your mini can play and just walk around spending time grazing. If the grass is too much for his body weight, you will need to also have a "dry pen" where he will be contained at night. My mini goes out into 3 acre pasture with my show mare for about 8 hours a day, and then spends the rest of the time in her dry pen near her friend. As summer comes to an end the pasture is poorer and I can leave her out for longer periods without her getting fat. She was obese and lightly foundered when I got her, but now her weight is healthy. She runs almost as fast as my mare and is thrilled to be out of the tiny corral where she used to spend her entire life before I got her! That isn't an ideal life for a pony, either.
