How much should an American Quarter Horse (Appaloosa) 21 yr old gelding go for2007-11-24 21:16:04

He is 15 1/2 hands, used to be a barrel racer- very fast, neck sensitive. I know he is pretty old but he still has a lot of go- you cant even tell!

Answers:

Is he registered as a quarter horse or an appaloosa, since he cannot be both. And pricing depends on a lot of things. Age (which you have mentioned) temperment, conformation, bad habits, soundness issues, what you want to use this horse for, etc. It is nearly impossible to tell you what an animal is worth without seeing the animal in person. I would take him to someone who is knowledgable and get them to give you an opinion on value. And then make your decision from there.

alot
At the ripe Ol Age of 21 well not much probably less than 1000.00
you need to provide us with more info. is he registered? is he good for the vet? farrier? UTD? vices? being bathed? trailering? has he won any titles? health problems? good joints? temperment in general? blood lines?
probably between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars, I guess kind of depending on if you want to buy another horse, you might want to try and sell him for just a little more so you can have a little more money to buy another horse.
Only how much someone is willing to pay.

He is not going to get any better then he is right now. He has only one way to go. So it is your chose to what to do.

i would pay 6,000
I would say around $1650 more or less because it is an AQHA and it can still be ridden. But, because it is older it cant go for as much as a younger horse with less miles.
i would pay between 1000 and 4500 for him. where i live, the younger the better
Even if he is still going strong, most people, considering his age, would not pay more than 1500. Even if the horse is in good condition you take a huge chance by buying an aged horse. They are more likely to develop problems faster and more serious than a younger horse.
For a horse that is 21yr. I wouldn't pay more then 700$$ Because he doesn't have that many riding years left, he couldn't keep up that much longer. Then he starting to get to the age were he is going to start needing senior care, which is more $$. That is just my opinion.
I would pay $2000 for him. Since he is older he can't go for $3000. Some people may pay more though (I'm a cheapy)
well i think that any thing over 3,500 is too much simpily because like u said he is old and i mean hes probly only got 2 or 3 yrs before his joints start getting arthritice and he becomes unridable or becomes just an old pasture horse used for very short rides.plus for that much money someone could go out and buy a very young horse and train it and then theyve got good horsey friend for around 29 yrs. but i also do think that anything under $900 isnt enough because of all the training and (riding) miles that you have put into him and that will make him a great beginners horse or a great lesson horse.
I have to agree with most of the others on the price being lower than higher. Personally I have had enough experience with sport of barrel racing to know that if he was raced alot throughout his life he is more likely than not to have some sort of arthritis or other problems related to the stresses on his body of the sport just like any athlete. Of course there are a few exceptions to the rule but like others have said, at his age you must expect some senior care and possible permanent soreness that will only increase after riding. Also, are you prepared to take on the senior horse care? $$$? I will say that you must keep in mind that many of these speed horses who are good at the sport will continue to have a "lot of go" until they can go no more. It is like a switch that turns on, they have been trained this way until it has become apart of who they are, in their blood especially if they seem to love it. Does that ,mean it's good for him? Well providing he doesn't have any old serious injury or arthritis looming once in a while may be ok, but be prepared for him to be sore the next day. He may be in perfect shape without any problems, I think everyone is just trying to say to keep his age in mind and the stresses his body has been through as an athlete.
