I have a matched team of mares who Ive retired from driving,2007-11-24 21:16:41

And I want to teach them to neck rein. The problem is, they've been going in a mullen mouth liverpool bit, and they really like the security of hanging on that bit! Which means they like much closer contact than this Western rider feels even remotely comfortable with. They ride nicely, very comfortable, will take any saddle, but really like to feel that bit! Any suggestions?

Mathaowny is correct about the reining, just give short light intermitant pulls while using your rein in the dirrection you want to go. I would suggest a Billy Allen bit. It is a nice transition from the mullen mouth. It has a copper roller in the middle that they like alot. You also have long shanks for leverage which will help them learn there turning method & keep them flexing.I had a 1/2 arab that was very sour from someone over training him {not me} & he hated all bits but I tried that one & he loved it. Your mares are great !! Good Luck

My horse used to be a plow horse, so I know exactly what you mean. Right now I'm teaching him to neckrein as simple as I can. If your mares don't know leg cues, you might want to teach them that too.

First, I cue my horse with my leg and pull the rein against his neck. If he doesn't respond, I gently pull his head in the way we're turning like a plow rein. So he learns that if I put the rein on the opposite side of his neck, he should turn away from it. He's learning pretty quickly what I want, soon I'm hoping that he'll get used to it completely.
