If my mare has milk, Does that mean she is pregnant2007-11-24 21:17:26

If it turns out that the mare isn't pregnant but has just had a foal weaned off of her, then you still need to watch her closely to make sure that her milk dries up in the normal way, and to make sure as well that she doesn't develop mastitis, which can be very painful and even life-threatening if it gets bad enough. I would cut her grain ration back in that case, and let her have more hay for a while, because too much grain just encourages mares to make more milk. Lastly, you need to rethink your reasons for buying a horse in the first place. If you don't have the time or interest in caring for one properly, why did you buy it in the first place? Horses need more than a stall and food- they require enormous amounts of time and energy to maintain, and they need the company of their own kind to remain healthy. If you knew you were never going to be home, and there was going to be no one around to look after your mare, then what you did was not only irresponsible, it was foolish as well. I'd recommend that you give some thought to asking the seller which you bought the horse from if she will take the mare back, because you don't have the time to care for her. This is a sad situation, and one that should NEVER have happened in the first place. This mare deserved better than what she got, that's for sure. Enough said.

PS: Sorry if that sounded harsh, but I tend to take a very dim view of irresponsible behavior, especially when a horse or another animal that can't speak for itself is involved and is clearly caught in a trap that is not of its own making. My belief has long been that the Golden Rule applies to animals as well as people- and we need to live by it.

I would board and call the vet...if she's prego call the owners and ask but then be all like well she is prego if thats what the vet sayz
A friend of mine bought a mare from a dealer, and discovered that she had milk. 4 months later out popped a foal. So I would say it is likely that your horse is pregnant. Get her checked by a vet so there are no surprises, and if she is pregnant, a vet should be able to give you some advice.
board her so she is being watched and have a vet check her. and definatley talk to the owners.
the hole producing milk thing usually means that they are pregnant or is nursing congrats on your baby horse. oh be careful animals get protective when pregnant
It would be a good bet she is pregnant or just had a foal. If she is dripping milk you dont have time to get a vet out she will drop in the next 24 hrs normally But you have to remember that horses have been having foals and still have foals everyday without any protection or interference from their owners. I would let her be and if she drops a baby just A) make sure it eats and B) make sure it drops manure and C) that the mare delivers the placenta too. If you want to go even further then put some iodine on the foals umbilical cord. My question would be and please dont take offence but why do you have a horse if your not around to be able to take care of it. ANd yes vets can be busy but their job is to check out our animals if you can call a vet and have them come out within a week at least for non emergancy care or within a couple hours if it is an emergancy then you need to be checking with other vets.
