Ok, I am not a horse person, very nice animals, but I'm a bit ignorant.

My 9 yr old loves them and has started to volunteer with a horse therapy place. I have to hang around and be there because of her age.

So anyway, I was hanging around the stable petting the horses and in an empty stall there was a rat running through it. So I freaked and wouldn't go back in.

I should have figured that was the reason for the cats, but I thought mice and for some reason would have felt fine if it was a mouse.

But is rats kind of common? Or at least not unheard of? It seams like a well-kept stable.

it's not really uncommon . . . rats/mice are actually pretty common no matter how well-kept a stable may be. they are attracted to grain, which they love to eat and commonly get into. hay also provides good shelter

Ohh the rats are hurting anything. Just leave them alone. you kid isn't going to be hurt unless he is dumb and tries to pick them up and gets bit.

it's not unheard of, but it isn't really good either. mice aren't a problem but rats are another story. They can de dangerous.

I would tell someone that works at the barn because there is a chance they don't know they have rats.

Rats can thrive in many different environments, especially around stored feed. Hopefully the cats could deter them, but often rats are too big for a lazy type cat to desire to kill. My brother in law shoots them with a pistol at our farm. Hopefully the stable can somehow exterminate them.

Yes, they're fairly common in stables.
